Three Old Japanese Art Dances for solo piano by Kōsaku Yamada (1886-1965) features three authentic melodies that capture the grace, ritual, and storytelling at the heart of traditional performance. "The Crane and Tortoise" originated as a folk song later developed into an art dance, performed by two dancers in a slow, graceful style symbolizing longevity and happiness. "The Four Seasons in Kyoto" is based on an older song-dance celebrating the seasonal beauty of Kyoto, historically Japan's capital. "The Song of the Plover" was derived from an ancient koto song, later adapted into a dance. Transcribed by one of the most influential Japanese composers of the 20th century, this charming set of dances offers a valuable introduction to the elegance of historical Japanese art forms.
