Louis Vierne (1870–1937) raised the organ symphony to its stylistic zenith.
Symphony No. 5, the largest of Vierne’s six organ symphonies, was full of misprints in its first edition. Our edition takes the composer’s autograph as its principal source. Unlike previous editions, Helga Schauerte-Maubouet has also drawn on a fragmentary handwritten errata list as a secondary source, allowing her to verify Vierne’s late alterations to details in the autograph.
Her foreword also sheds light on the biographical background and explains the work’s genesis in great detail. Using previously unpublished letters, she has been able, for the first time, to provide exact dates for each movement.
- New source material used for the first time
- Detailed comprehensive foreword (Fr/Ger/Eng) on the work’s genesis and notes on performance practice
- Full Critical Commentary (Fr/Eng/Ger)
- Many illustrations and facsimile pages
