(Schubert Dream)
For Piano Four Hands
Commissioned by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center for an "Homage to Schubert" concert, Allegretto quasi Andantino was composed for the piano duo of Emanuel Ax and Yoko Nozaki. The 12-minute work takes its title from the tempo marking of Schubert's Grand Rondo in A Major and is sparked of a few half-remembered bits of that wonderful work. As in any dream, events do not always follow one another with the logic of daytime, and surprising associations (Mussorgsky, for one) might float past on the surreal narrative stream. (YouTube recording by Caroline Hsu & Daniel Tan, Music@Menlo 2015 Koret Young Performers Concert 2.) For advanced pianists.
