Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven mostly wrote dance music as a commission for court and nobility. Schubert was in the social class of the emerging middle class. His dance music did not result in a financially demanding "order", at most that of occasionally giving pleasure to his friends and his company. It comes from a time when "art music" and "light music" did not yet see any contrast; and how many of his songs became popular with all their high art, none of his dances deny real Viennese and Austrian folklore. The two volumes at hand (Waltz and German Dances UT 50063 / Ländler, Ecossaisen, Minuets UT 50064) contain the most beautiful and popular dances, selected from the more than twice as extensive oeuvre of this endearing Schubert genre. The dances published at Schubert's time or shortly afterwards (such as "First Waltz", "Last Waltz", "Wiener Damen-L trader" or "20 Minuets" etc.) are left in their context, of the smaller groups and individual pieces most beautiful have been included in these two selection volumes. Both volumes contain a foreword and critical notes. The source report published in "All Dances for Piano" (UT 50021/22) provides a complete overview of scientific issues and bibliographical problems, which also include the numerous arrangements.
