3. Satz der Sonata Concertante (1973)
This two-volume edition with the joint title “Miriam’s Song” is dedicated to Jewish women composers of the 19th and 20th centuries. It contains the viola arrangements of works by Fanny Hensel1 née Mendelssohn, Vally Weigl, Lena Stein-Schneider and the Allegro moderato of the original work written by Ruth Schonthal2 (Volume 1) as well as Helene Liebmann and Sarah Feigin (Volume 2).
The title of the edition relates to the singing and dancing of the prophetess Miriam at the sea mentioned in the Torah. Significantly, the Berlin painter Wilhelm Hensel portrayed his wife, the composer Fanny Hensel née Mendelssohn, as Miriam in the 19th century.
The romantic concert repertoire for viola is relatively limited. It was the editors’ wish to help revive these works originally written for violin, cello or clarinet and increase their popularity.
