Mendelssohn began composing this Trio on April 5th, 1820, and completed it on May 9th, in his eleventh year. At the time, he was studying composition with Carl Friedrich Zelter; it is not unlikely that Zelter assigned the Trio to Felix, to expose him to the compostiion of a larger form.
