At Brahms's own request, his friend Theodor Kirchner (1823 to 1903), widely regarded as the finest arranger of his generation, transcribed the String Sextet No. 2 in G major, Op. 36, for piano trio. Brahms held Kirchner's arrangements in the highest regard, and Simrock first issued the sextet transcriptions in 1883. In the trio version the chamber-music character of the music comes through with great clarity, making this beloved work available to a far wider circle of players. This Bärenreiter Urtext edition, edited by Emanuel Signer, presents the arrangement in a scholarly-critical text with an informative introduction and critical commentary, supplied as score and parts.
