The existence of Florence B. Price’s Moods has long been known, but until recently
all the known autographs (sources C1 through D2 in this edition) were fragmentary and
did not permit a reliable reconstruction. That changed in 2023, when Dr. Paul Kratoska
purchased a Chicago apartment previously owned by clarinetist Casja Ilo. In the
apartment Kratoska found two previously unknown, and invaluable, sources for Moods:
a complete fair-copy autograph score bound and inscribed by the composer (source A)
and a separately written-out autograph piano part based on that score (source B). He
donated these to the Special Collections division of the University of Arkansas Libraries,
Fayetteville – and in so doing made it possible for Moods finally to be published, nearly
eighty years after it was completed.
