Die dreiteilige Ausgabe enthält Bachs sämtliche Bearbeitungen fremder Kompositionen. Wahrscheinlich entstanden die Arrangements im Auftrag des Prinzen Johann Ernst von Sachen-Weimar um 1713/1714. Die Konzertbearbeitungen sind Zeugnis der intensiven Beschäftigung Bachs mit der damals neuen italienischen Konzertkunst und ihrem führenden Exponenten, mit Antonio Vivaldi.
