Hand crafted in the USA
Mollard is a small family business that has made conducting batons since 1981. Every baton is made in the USA from hand selected hardwoods, then hand finished and hand balanced. Handles are polished to a high gloss, and shafts are finished in clear gloss or bright white. Mollard designs its own carbon fiber shafts to feel like wood, rather than using fishing rod blanks.
The result is a baton that is extremely light, responds quickly and precisely, resists whipping, splitting and splintering, and helps reduce fatigue over a long rehearsal.
Choosing your baton
Choosing a baton is a lot like choosing a golf club or a tennis racket: one size does not fit all. If you are a conducting student, check with your teacher first, since many prefer a particular length or weight. Otherwise, Mollard suggests thinking about:
Your arms. Comparing baton length to your forearm is a good starting point.
Your hand. Hand size and finger length decide which handle shape feels right.
Your ensemble and room. Distance to the players, the lighting and the size of the group all affect how visible the baton needs to be.
Balance. 12" wood batons balance within 1/4" of the handle, 14" wood batons within 1/2", and 16" carbon fiber batons within 1".
Small ensembles: P12
For crisp, precise beats with a small baroque ensemble, Mollard recommends the 12" P Series.
Choirs: S14
For larger choirs, Mollard recommends the 14" S Series with its pear shaped handle.
Pit work: E14
For opera and theater pits, Mollard recommends the 14" E Series with its larger, high visibility handle.
Bands and large forces: E16
For large bands or combined forces, Mollard recommends the 16" E Series.
