Frederick Grinke (the dedicatee) and the pianist Michael Mullinar gave the premiere of this sonata in 1954. The opening Fantasia contrasts a rhythmic piano figure with a slow flowing theme on the violin (low in its register), while the second movement is a sardonic march-like Scherzo. The finale, a set of six variations on a theme, includes a characterful country dance, and a cadenza that reminds us of The Lark Ascending.
