Giuseppe Concone was an Italian singing master, pianist and composer who taught in Paris. Here, he wrote and published sets of "...melodious and well written..." exercises, which won worldwide recognition for their value in voice training. June Emerson, bassoonist, music publisher and editor of this selection of forty of Concone's studies, was introduced to them by her former teacher William Waterhouse. In the method introduction she writes "These legato studies, with their long phrases, are ideal for developing a good tone on the bassoon. They need full breath support and, to gain the most benefit, they should be played quite slowly." She explains that she has changed much of the phrasing "to make the studies more bassoon-like than vocal," but has left a few difficult slurs unaltered as a challenge to the developing player.
