Tracing the history of the art of collecting music is a relatively new scholarly phenomenon. The present compendium, prepared by an international group of research scholars, is the result of a project that was launched by the Fondation Royaumont following its acquisition of the library of the pianist Francois Lang (1908-1944). Following logically upon the contents of the first volume (Collectionner la musique: histoires d'une passion, 2010); this new volume focuses upon the question of the "collector-interpreter." The phenomenon of collecting, which has been central to the work of certain artists, is here illustrated, first, by a series of articles concerning, among others, the collections of Davitt Moroney, Robert Spencer, and Richard Bonynge, and second, by a series of portraits of collector-interpreters from the sixteenth century down to the present day including, among others, Adrien Smout, R. F. E. von Schonborn, Camille Saint-Saens, and Alfred Cortot.
