The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) transcriptions to English and English singing translations, word-for-word translations for Norwegian and Danish texts, short biographies of the various poets, an introduction and brief history of the evolution of the Norwegian language, and suggestions for using the IPA are all found in this volume.

Professor Ellingboe prepared this exciting book, almost from its inception, in close association with Dr. Dag Schjelderup-Ebbe, the eminent Grieg scholar. The principal purpose for the book, although there are many secondary uses, is to make Grieg's wonderful songs accessible, in their original language, to English speaking singers.
