Granados wrote a considerable number of works inspired by the pictorial work of Francisco de Goya, which undoubtedly found their culminating point in the piano suite entitled Goyescas-Los majos enamorados . The popularity of the aforementioned suite means that "Goyescas" is often understood only as the pieces that make up the two parts of Goyescas-Los majos enamorados . However, in reality all the pieces in the suite belong to the Goyescas cycle and also all the numbers of the Goyescas opera , coinciding for the most part with those of the piano work, but which also include El pelele and Intermezzo, both independent of the suite in its piano version. A small group of works for piano also belongs to this section that served as the basis for the subsequent elaboration of Goyescas-Los majos enamorados ( Jácara , Crepúsculo and Serenata goyesca ) as well as the Tonadillas for voice and piano.
The set of works that make up Goyescas-Los majos enamorados represents a formidable challenge for the performers, due to the fact that its complex passages, elaborate ornamentation and dense texture require a high level of piano virtuosity. This work represents, together with Iberia de Albéniz, the pinnacle of Spanish piano music.
